SONG REVIEW: "Warning Signs" by Broadside

Written by Shelby B.

Within just a little over two months, Broadside released two of their quickest rising songs, “I Think They Know” and “Warning Signs.” With a ton of new listeners pouring in from different social media platforms, Broadside is making their name known. As a self proclaimed underrated band, they sure are gaining traction on TikTok and Instagram. To be specific, BookTok is really claiming them for their own. Clips of their new songs have flooded for you pages, and their streams are continuously going up.

Broadside has been putting out solid music since 2015 with their first album Old Bones. As a lot of pop-punk bands did in the 2000’s and mid 2010’s, they had a hit single right out the gate “Coffee Talk.” With over 1.9 million views on YouTube and it being released while on Warped Tour, “Coffee Talk” became a staple in many elder emo’s playlists.

Having a start like that is incredible for the band, but it puts them in a box when they go for something bigger. Listeners will always revert back and want music like their first album. Their second album Paradise was definitely more on the pop side and that split a lot of fans' opinions. Many liked the more melodic sound, but a ton missed the heavier portion. Keep in mind, the band was going through some member changes at the time and we later found out about the discourse between their previous record label during the making of this album. They were trying to find their sound, while also fitting the mold they were being shoved into. When they were free from their contract is when their talents really started to come to light.

Their past hasn’t stopped this trio from continuously growing in an incredible way. After years of touring and getting out of their previous contract, Broadside finally had a chance to make the music they wanted to make. Their last album Hotel Bleu, released in 2023, was really just a glimpse into what the band has to offer. They found a way to still have the fun pop sound, while also throwing in the heavier and emotional moments that so many fans missed. Oliver (lead singer), Pat (bass), and Dom (guitar), are taking chances and truly knocking them out of the park.

For example, we really get to hear Pat’s vocal abilities in “I Think They Know” as well as mixing in their songs that we haven’t heard from them before. Both of the singles have been dynamic in tone and lyrically some of their strongest lines to date.

“Warning sings like neon lights all over the walls. It’s easier to act like I don't see them at all.”

It is so easy to ignore the parts we don’t want to recognize in another person. Their red flags look pretty green with the rose colored glasses on. The latest two songs are raw and truly connect with so many fans. And that’s not to say that they haven’t had songs like this in the past, but the energy and symbolism that the band put into the last two videos all feel so perfectly aligned with what Broadside represents.

“I Think They Know” and “Warning Signs” have been connected and seem to be creating a story line that they have not revealed to the public yet. Watching the videos almost feels like a game of clue trying to put pieces together until the mystery is solved. I highly doubt they’ll be an underrated band for long with the traction they have been getting on TikTok. Although I would love to gatekeep them, they deserve all the recognition within the pop-punk community. I can’t wait to see what the next release has in store!

If you haven’t given them a chance, check out Broadside’s newest single “Warning Signs” on all platforms and make sure to follow them for all of their upcoming projects.
